Create a Custom Twitter Header

Any time a social media outlet changes the way it looks, or changes its layout, it sends everyone into a mad scramble to get their account fixed up. Whether you own a business, you’re a designer, web developer, or a social media enthusiast, is important to have your social media account looking top notch. The problem is, they don’t always tell you the right size for the images for these accounts. This can be frustrating because you pick out your image and you have to crop it two or three times just to get it in the right dimensions. Not only is this annoying, but it also wastes your valuable time as well. You don’t have to waste your time. If you know the right dimensions for your social media images, you can set presets inside of Photoshop or illustrator and just drop your images in. In the video below, I’m going to show you how to set up your custom Twitter header.

The new Twitter layout is meant to look more personal. You have your profile picture on the left, followed by your bio underneath. Under that, you can see preview images of all your photos that you’ve uploaded to your Twitter account. These are commonly known as Twit pics that you’ve linked to your account. In the middle, you’ll find information such as your tweets, your videos and photos, who you’re following, how many followers you have, and your favorites. Underneath that, you’ll find all of your latest tweets. One handy thing that you can do is if you have a certain tweet that you want to promote, you can pin it to the top of your Twitter page. This is really handy for promoting a subscription link to your website or your latest website promotion.

So, I’m sure you want to know the proper twitter dimensions for your main header image. Twitter recommends that you use 1500 pixels wide by 500 pixels high as your dimensions. However, the best size is actually 1500 pixels wide by 421 pixels high. You’re going to want to use the highest quality image possible, because twitter automatically upscales your image and crops it. I don’t know why they chose to do this, but your image won’t look exactly as you intended. There is an area to each side on the left and right that will not show up in your Twitter header. It is important not to put anything important in there. If you place your logo in your Twitter header make sure to center it and leave roughly an inch to an inch and a half on each side for plenty of breathing room.
